Off the Boat, Into the Warm Water

Ferry cabins are always colder than they need to be. You come through the arrivals gate at the Outer Harbour with the air-conditioning still sitting in your shoulders and the bag still on one of them, and the evening has not taken a shape yet. Hotel first, or straight over? At Victoria Sauna that question has a ready answer: the warm water first, everything else after.

Book through this site and the car is waiting outside the gate; the ride ends on the fifth floor of L’Arc Macau. The bag goes into a locker in the changing room, and then you are in the corridor. Black marble on both sides, and along the ceiling a single line of gold light that runs ahead of you and picks out the grain in the stone. A man who came over on the same sailing is a few steps ahead, and he does not slow down at all: past the door of the lounge without a glance, straight on to the end.

The corridor ends at the mosaic massage pool. One long wave of gold tile runs from the doorway to the water, gold into copper into cream, band over band, and the warm light on it makes the whole room the colour of the wall. The water is held at temperature. Whatever hour you arrive, it is the same water. Your calves warm first; when it closes over your shoulders, the cold of the crossing starts to leave from exactly the place it settled. Twenty minutes later you could not say what you were deciding at the gate.

He is already in, of course. He tells you his order has been the same for a while: the pool first, to get warm again; only then does he think about which treatment tonight. He says it with total confidence: “The water is the same at any hour, and the therapists are here until six in the morning, so nobody is in a hurry.” The first half you have just tested yourself. The second half we checked with the house for you: therapists are on shift from one in the afternoon until six in the morning. The house itself is open 24 hours.

The clock has not started yet. When you climb out you go back to the recliner lounge, purple velvet recliners under a European plaster ceiling, and stay as long as you like. Your hour begins the moment the therapist begins; the pool, the recliner and the choosing are your own time, not the session’s. A surprising number of first-time guests from Hong Kong do not know this and rush the soak. There is no need.

One thing we say up front. The house reopened recently and the opening arrangements for individual areas are still being adjusted; which areas are open on a given night, we tell you straight when you book. Your spend covers a stay of up to 15 hours, and there is an overnight rest area inside for anyone who would rather sleep before the morning boat; room types and charges follow the current menu confirmed when you book. Two things people say at the edge of the pool

”Straight off the boat and into the water, is that too soon?”

No. It is the best moment for it. The water is held at temperature, so there is nothing to wait for, and twenty minutes is enough for the crossing to leave your shoulders. Guests who soak first choose their treatment more calmly than guests who choose first.

”If I arrive after midnight, is the pool still open?”

The house is open 24 hours and the mosaic massage pool is a permanent facility; therapists are on shift until six in the morning, so there is time for a soak and then a full treatment. You do not have to settle it at the gate. The date, how many of you, whether you go back that night or stay, roughly which series you have in mind: one message on WhatsApp, Telegram, LINE or WeChat.
